How do I verify a New Jersey dentist's license?
Use the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System, choose Person Search, and match the dentist by more than a name. Confirm the profession or license type, license number, status, location, and the result shown for public board actions. Record the source and the date you checked it. A license result verifies the facts displayed by the state; it is not a ranking, endorsement, or guarantee of care or outcomes.
Start at the official state system
The New Jersey State Board of Dentistry directs the public to the Division of Consumer Affairs verification system. Use the official state link rather than a copied profile, search-engine snippet, commercial directory, or screenshot. The state describes the system as real-time and intended for verification.
- Choose Person Search for an individual dentist
- Select the dental profession or license type when the system offers that filter
- Search with at least two identifying details when possible, such as name plus city or license number
- Open the detail result instead of relying on the results-list summary
Match the right person
A same or similar name is not enough. Compare the full professional name, credential, profession, license number, city or practice information, and any other displayed identifiers. If the details do not align, ask the practice for the exact licensed name and license number before drawing a conclusion.
Read the fields separately
Check the current status, issue and expiration dates when displayed, and the state's public board-action field. Note whether a result belongs to the individual or to a business. Other registrations may appear, but one credential should not be described as another—for example, a state controlled-substance registration is not a federal DEA registration or a sedation permit.
Understand what the result cannot prove
A current license does not establish specialty certification, malpractice coverage, insurance participation, price, availability, communication style, competence for every procedure, or a particular outcome. A displayed absence of public board actions is limited to that portal result and date; it does not prove that no private complaint, civil matter, nonpublic event, or later change exists.
Keep paid participation separate

Save the exact URL and check date, then ask the dentist or practice to clarify the discrepancy.
